		Songs Here are some of my musical compositions. Some are simple acoustic recordings, some are beefed up with a variety of instruments and sound fx, and some are electronic/MIDI-based pieces. I've specified my personal favorites with a Mike's Pick! tag. When I'm Alone September 2009 - Old song. New recording. More G2M usage. Morning Sunshine Mike's Pick! August 2009 - This is a whole lot faster than most of my other pieces. I wrote it a year or so ago, but never liked it enough to show the guys in the Hindsight Prophets. So I decided to see what I could do with it as a SongByMike. I used the Sonuus G2M again on this one. Answers Mike's Pick! July 2009 - I wrote this a couple of months ago and recorded it yesterday. I really like the dissonant guitar line it contributes to the musical ether. This song also marks the first use of the Sonuus G2M my girlfriend got me a few months back. Who says you need a saxamaphone to play the saxamaphone?! ;P Return July 2009 - Here's a song I wrote on-the-fly while recording...an exploration of different writing methods/workflows and whatnot. I learned a lot about the production side of things while doing this. Push Mike's Pick! July 2009 - Probably a record for me as far as short songs go...but I'm happy with it. Secrets July 2009 - A harmless little honky-tonky diddy. You Say You Love My Way April 2009 - A song I wrote like 10 years ago, but have just gotten around to recording. I Deceived You March 2009 - Just a harmless little song I wrote sometime last year and recorded last week. The Race February 2009 - A simple bluesy tune w/ a little slide guitar thrown in. Beckish experiment February 2009 - Just a little instrumental composition that works well as background music to whatever you're currently doing. No Sound in Space Mike's Pick! February 2009 - "There's no sound in space to propagate your lies..." ==>or so I've heard! Anyway, I got to use my long-neglected Wah Wah pedal on this one... End of the World February 2009 - Just your average run-of-the-mill Doomsday/Judgement Day love song. Instrumental with T December 2008 - A SongsByMike vintage recording!...so I recently pulled out my old Tascam Portastudio from my closet and found an old experimental recording I did with a drummer named T...from sometime around...1994...ish...just a guess?? The point is...it's old! MIDI composition from my BOXX box - - MIDI composition from 11/2/2008 - - MIDI composition from 11/12/2008 November 2008 - A veritable trifecta of MIDI fun! Three pieces to share here, all composed in the same week...a week I had a cold and didn't much feel like singing... Vocal Only 4 - "Walking Fool" September 2008 - Another vocal only experiment. They're superfun to make. You Concede Mike's Pick! September 2008 - A harmless mellow little late night tune. Not Another Word - redux Mike's Pick! August 2008 - Ok...so here I've rerecorded Not Another Word, using some of the "vocal only" material from last month in the background. Windows XP Diddy July 2008 - This is just a little experimental piece I've made using the sounds available in the /media directory of the Windows XP operating system. With Microsoft's bold onslaught of Vista, I suppose I should be calling it "A Windows XP Requiem." ;) Not Another Word - All Vocal Version July 2008 - Ahhh...so to extend my "all vocals, all of the time" trend here on songsbymike.net, I've taken a song I wrote sometime last year and attempted an all vocal version of it... Elfman-ish Mike's Pick! July 2008 - So...after hearing the vocal experiment I posted last week, my brother Joe challenged me to do another vocal experiment, but this time in the style of Danny Elfman. Not one to back down from a good challenge (well, that's not entirely true...I back down from challenges a-plenty, but not this time!), I accepted. I'm actually pretty pleased with the results. It's completely cheesy, I know...but that was sort of the point. The only sounds I used were vocal sounds... Vocal Experiment (a.k.a. "The Stalker Song") Mike's Pick! June 2008 - HA! So I was feeling a little experimental...and had a Sunday afternoon with no chores (that I was willing) to do around the apartment...So...without further ado, I present to you....(MIDI drumroll)...VOCAL EXPERIMENT! ...hot off the presses! ...the only thing you really need to know about this piece is that I used only noises made by my mouth (voices, clicks, pops, etc...). Anyway, I hope you enjoy! For You To Follow June 2008 - A simple, mellow song. Maddest of Them All Mike's Pick! June 2008 - Blah blah!... not much to say about this song. It's got kind of an Elvis Costello feel to it, I guess. Everything I Can Stand Mike's Pick! June 2008 - Here's a pretty straight forward tune I wrote about two years ago. I figured it was too mellow for the Hindsight Prophets (not that we're that heavy a band!), so I figured I'd record it on my own. Soundtracky_01 April 2008 - Ok...the goal was to make something that sounds like an orchestral soundtrack from a movie. Don't really know how to measure success here...without a real orchestra at my disposal, it feels a little too electronic...kind of like it belongs in a video game. ;) Eleven Past Midnight Mike's Pick! March 2008 - Another crack at a jazz style tune. This one came out much better than the last one, I think...not specifically as a jazz style tune, but as a song in general. I like it enough to give it a Mike's Pick!, anyway... ;) You'll Never Know March 2008 - I was trying to do a jazz style tune here. I'm not crazy about the results, but that's not gonna stop me from sharing! ;) 28dayslaterish March 2008 - Another instrumental experiment. I was going for something like 28 Days/Weeks Later, but I think it ended up sounding more like something out of Crocodile Dundee. Oh well. On to the next one! ;) Godfatherish March 2008 - An instrumental experiment. As the title suggests, I wanted to do something Godfatherish...but with a beat. When I'm There Mike's Pick! February 2008 - Finally a real songbymike after such a long stretch of MIDI instrumentals. Moonsounds February 2008 - And yet another MIDI/electronic instrumental piece! Only this one I recorded on the moon. I'm feeling almost ready to do a real songy song again...but apparently, not quite there yet. Perhaps the next one. I wasn't serious about the moon. Circle Prog 1/23/2008 Mike's Pick! January 2008 - Another MIDI piece here. As the name implies, I started with a circle progression and tried to create a piece around it... Fun with circle progressions and fun with MIDI! Yee Haw!! Strings Piece 1/17/2008 January 2008 - Wow! Six months is a long time to neglect this website! Well, I haven't exactly been neglecting it. I've been focusing my energies on adding videos to my YouTube channel, which technically adds content to my Videos page. ;) So, anyway...this month, I've been working a lot with MIDI, and decided to post a tune here...it's sort of an orchestral piece...but without a real orchestra, of course... Instrumental-electronique June 2007 - Trying for something a little different here. At least different than my recent additions to this site. I Was Blind June 2007 - A simple and quiet song, with a more complex and louder bridge. It was His Plan Mike's Pick! April 2007 - I wrote this song a few years ago, but it didn't seem appropriate to show to the band I play with...so there it sat in my binder til I finally got motivated to do something with it. Not Another Word April 2007 - I wanted to keep it simple with this song. No drums. No bass. No backup vocals. Just me and my guitar... Screw the Neighbors April 2007 - I don't really hate my neighbors...I don't even KNOW my neighbors! ;) You and I March 2007 - Nothing terribly interesting to say about this tune. It's fun to play though, and I hope you enjoy it. Instrumental #2 February 2007 - A second guitar-heavy instrumental for ya. Mobylike Mike's Pick! January 2007 - So I like me some Moby! This track doesn't sound so much like him, but that was my starting point, anyway. The female voice on there is my sister. Thx Debs! Five Star Voodoo December 2006 - A blues attempt. From all my Calculations December 2006 - I was going for a thick sound here. The instrumental motif b/n the verses is suspiciously similar to the Krypton theme from Superman: The Movie. Hey, it was a starting point, anyway... Thx John! ;) Instrumental #1 Mike's Pick! November 2006 - I love Joe Satriani. I felt like doing something a little Satch-ish, so here's my attempt. I also tried to adhere to a rondo structure with a main reccuring theme intermixed with unique themes.
